Dean Allen Sampson, a cherished pillar of the Ames, Iowa community, passed away on March 3, 2024, at the age of 80, following a valiant battle with cancer. Dean's legacy is one of unwavering devotion--to his family, his faith, and his community. His life was a testament to the power of compassion, kindness, and dedication.

Born on August 8, 1943, in Ames, to Askel and Olive Sampson, Dean's early life was marked by a strong sense of duty and service, qualities that led him to the Marines after graduating from Nevada High School.

In 1965, fate intervened when Dean met Judy Cole in Ames, thanks to his Uncle Harlan's matchmaking. Their love story began, leading to their marriage on September 2, 1967. Together, they embarked on a journey filled with love, joy, and the blessings of their children, Jon, Troy, and Amy. Dean's role as a father and later as a grandfather was characterized by boundless love, joy, and pride in his family.

Dean's career as a quality assurance analyst at Ralston Purina in Clinton, IA, spanned 32 years, reflecting his commitment to excellence and integrity. His professional achievements were matched by his active involvement in the community, particularly through the First United Methodist Churches in Clinton and Ames. His faith was a driving force in his life, inspiring him to serve others in numerous ways.

Facing Judy's Alzheimer's diagnosis, Dean's advocacy for a cure became a personal crusade, highlighted by his remarkable effort to walk every street in Story County in 2019 to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Association. His passion for Iowa State Cyclone sports was another facet of his vibrant life, with him being a fixture at numerous athletic events, embodying the spirit of loyalty and support.

His retirement years were anything but idle. Alongside Judy, he immersed himself in volunteer work, touching lives at Reiman Gardens, Mary Greeley Hospital Gift Shop, Affordables consignment store, and beyond to communities all over the United States at volunteer work camps. Their adventures also took them around the globe, exploring new cultures and making lasting memories.

Dean's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit of generosity, his unwavering support, and his love for life will continue to inspire. He was predeceased by his father Askel, mother Olive, and wife Judy. He is lovingly remembered by his children Jon with wife Tammera, Troy with wife Joanna, and Amy with husband Eric; his cherished grandchildren Benjamin, Everett, Ike, and Gus; siblings Wayne, Gary, and Linda; and a community enriched by his presence.

A celebration of Dean's life will be held on Saturday, March 9, at 2:00 pm at the Ames First United Methodist Church, with visitation earlier that day from 9:00-11:00 am at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care. In honor of Dean's legacy, contributions to the Ames First United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association (https://tinyurl.com/dean-alz) are welcomed in lieu of flowers, as a tribute to his life of service and love.
