Biography

James Carstairs Sanders was born on 19 September 1833 and christened on 21 September 1833 at St Andrews Church, Fife, Scotland. He was the son of William Sanders (Saunders) and Harriet Carstairs. ^[1]

He arrived in South Australia on 7 December 1838 with his father William and mother Harriet, his brother Robert and sister Harriet, on the Catherine Jamieson. The Catherine Jamieson had departed Leith, Scotland.^[2]

He married Emma Harriett McKinlay on 11 November 1860, at Mary Vale Queensland.^[3]

James and Emma had seven children:

• Edith Alice Sanders born 1872;^[5]
• Bessie Sanders born 1873;^[6]
• William Blackwood Sanders born 1875;^[7]
• Lucy Mary Sanders born 1876;^[8]

• Francis Gordon Sanders born 1879/^[10]

James died on 28 September 1898 at New Glenelg, South Australia ^[11]and was buried on 30 September 1898 at Brighton St Judes Anglican cemetery.^[12]

SANDERS. —On the 28th September, at Laxmount Cottage, Glenelg, James Carstairs Sanders, of ""Brackly,"" Mount Lofty, aged 65 years.^[13]
