Biography

Charlotte Saunders was born in Harbour Island, Bahamas to Benjamin Saunders Jr and his wife about 1780. We know who Benjamin's children were - from his detailed February 1796 will - but not when they were born.

Benjamin wrote "...I give and bequeath unto my daughter Charlotte Saunders a pair of silver shoe buckles that was bought for her and sixteen dollars being part of the money Charles was sold for.. "

Charlotte married Benjamin Thompson, son of John Thompson and Alice Gilbart Thompson of Nassau, 1 August 1799, in Harbour Island, Bahamas. Benjamin and Charlotte lived in Nassau and they had children there - not all of whom survived infancy: Benjamin Harvey, Cornelius Benjamin Brown, Maria Joanna, John Freeman, Alexander Pratt, Thomas James, Elizabeth, and Charlotte Thompson.

Benjamin and Charlotte became the guardians, in 1816, of Charlotte's nieces and nephews, the children of John Whitehead and Jane Saunders Whitehead. Jane, a widow, wrote a will in 1816 with instructions: " .. Item. It is my wish that my loving sister, Charlotte Thompson, wife of Benjamin Thompson of the Island of New Providence aforesaid Gentleman, and the said Benjamin, be Guardians for and on behalf of my said children Robert Henry, John Alexander, and Anne Sarah .."

Charlotte passed away in Nassau, Bahamas, February 1818, from the complications of childbirth. Her infant daughter, Charlotte, died five days after her mother, 23 February 1818.
