Biography

Stephen was born in 1835 in Nova Scotia, Canada. He is the son of William Saunders and Irene Poole.

Stephen's nieces Ella and Jennie were the daughters of Gilbert Saunders and Seraphina Morse. Their father Gilbert died in 1864 and mother Seraphina died in 1865. After their deaths they were adopted by their uncle Stephen Saunders and aunt Nan Alline.

San Jose Daily Mercury, Feb. 4, 1869. "In Gilroy, January 28th, Allan DeWolf, only child of Stephen P. and Nannie Sanders, aged 4 years, 2 months and 14 days." (Calculated birth date.)

According to the Oak Hill Cemetery death certificates index by History San Jose, "Ellen DeWolf" (female) who died Jan. 28, 1869, was re-interred at Oak Hill on Dec. 16, 1874. This was probably a re-interment from Gilroy after the family purchased the family plot at Oak Hill.
