John V. Schaffer was the son of Jacob Joseph Schaffer (1906-1966) and Elizabeth A. Lechmann (1909-1980). He was the husband of Vanita M. Dreher.

Tribute: John V. Schaffer was born in Iliff, Colorado to Jacob J. and Elizabeth (Lechman) Schaffer. He grew up on a farm in the eastern plains of Colorado, attending school in Ovid and Julesburg. On May 30, 1953 he married Vanita M. Dreher in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Mr. Schaffer entered the United States Marine Corps on February 11, 1951. He served in the Korean War earning the Korean Service Medal with 3 stars, the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean P.U.C. and the Good Conduct Medal. He returned from Korea and was an instructor at Engineer School Battalion in Camp Le June, North Carolina. After being honorably discharged in 1955 he moved to Wiggins, Colorado where he was a dairy farmer for 10 years. In April 1977 Mr. Schaffer became a mechanic for Flatiron Paving Company, retiring in 1988 after 21 years. From 1964 to 1972 he was a trombonist playing with the Polkatoon Band. From 1972 to 1975 he played with the Alpiners Polka Band. After retiring he started playing again with the Polkatoons, which he did from 1988 to December 31, 1996.
Mr. Schaffer died Thursday, November 8, 2007 at North Colorado Medical Center.
