I am the eldest child of Johannes & Grace Schafferius. Many years ago, when I was about 3 or 4, we lived in a high blocked house rented from Aubrey Burton, in Stephen Street Murgon. Some time later Mum and Dad bought a little hut, in the same street. I think it only had a dirt floor, very small dining space and a bed for the kids at the other end of the building.
At this stage Dad bought a nice chestnut horse called “Kelly”. He used to put him in the sulky and go out to Manyoung to visit Uncle Gus and Aunty Margaret Gigler. She had the nickname of Aunty Dick. I can clearly recall Dad only a bridle instead of winkers on old Kelly. One Sunday whilst coming home from Manyoung, old Kelly shied with Dad, Mum, myself, Eric and Norm (my brothers). I don’t think my sister Eileen was born then. However, with smoked sausage, vegetables, you name it plus two dead hares dangling from the axle, the wheel of the sulky was broken.
We were in a heap on the road in the main street of Murgon. This led “Farder” as we called him in later years, to convert the sulky into a spring cart. We used to go out to Grandfather Houghton’s farm to get a load of fire wood. Dad often ploughed allotments in town growing lots of vegetables, sometimes giving them away and sometimes selling some. He was always busy, up before daylight digging post holes.
We had a cow called “Nussey” given to us as a calf. She in turn had a calf and had to be trained to bail up, to be milked. As time went on the kids were growing up and eating more and our Dad left Angels store where he drove a truck. We went farming first to Redgate then Cinnabar, then to Tansey. I was 13 years old then and left school to help on the farm. We mowed lucerne cocked hay and carted it on the wagon to the hayshed.
Dad loved to dance in his single days. Later when we were “young youths” we all danced, even Mother learnt at 38 years of age. Dad was M.C. at many dances.
