Biography

Carl and Johanne arrived in South Australia from Bremen, Germany on 2nd March 1849 on the barque ' George Washington', along with four of their children.

James Mitchener wrote in his chronology "TEXAS" that in the late 18th Century/ 19th, There was an economic crisis in Rhineland and a surplus population, Germany was very divided with about 100 petty states or Principalities. Common land was being Enclosed. These was an unprecedented cold winter and crops failed. Currency was a tedious barter system. If young people did not have a job, they could not get a house or get married. People were not welcome in other Principalities and there were costs for squatting.

War with France or Russia was probable. Emmigration was controlled by the local Princes. The Church was tied to the Princes' benefit and there was a drift from Lutherenism. There was a slow clandestine movement of escape with the promise of land and freedom in USA and Australia. For Pennsylvania a book was produced "A Practical guide to life in America"

Is it known why Carl migrated to Australia?
posted by Steve Thomas
No except for the general explanation in my text. There was a falling out in the family and Frank Schottelius changed the family name to Raebel in 1915. My father hated Germans (a young man on his squadron was executed by the Gestapo). He lived at Staplyton on the Gold Coast which was settled by Germans in the 19th Century. Pimpima Island Cemetery where Dad is, is mostly German and descendants. There is another Cemetery on Stradbroke Island at One Mile where there must have been a great death toll while in Quarantine each marked with a small numbered iron cross.
