Biography

According to his grave marker, Johannes Schroth was born on January 24, 1857, Kronental, Crimea, Russia. He married Rosina Hoffmann in 1881. In 1910 most of the family immigrated to Canada. Son Gustav departed England on May 7, 1910, with his wife Katha and brother Peter. Daughters Amalia and Christina arrived in Quebec on September 4, 1910. Johannes, Rosina and daughter Elizabeth arrived on October 17, 1910. What is curious is the family booking on the Megantic, departing England on August 6, 1910. The record shows John Schroth (53); Rosina (53), Amalie (22); Elizabeth (11) and Christina (10). However, the names are all crossed out on the list. This leaves daughters Leitha (b. 1898) and Lena (b. 1899) unaccounted for although both girls are shown on the 1916 census. Could Leith and Lena actually be the middle names of the two youngest daughers?

Around 1920 some of the family, including Johannes and Rosina, moved to the Trochu area which is about 140 kilometres northeast of Calgary.. There is information about the family in Remember When - History of Trochu and District, published in 1975. The Scroth family entry was written by George Schroth, son of Gustav. An excerpt is as follows:

While we lived on the Month farm, Dad would break bronco horses for a Mr. Cormier, who was a horse trader for the province of Quebec. One of these horses kicked my grandfather, which led to his early death in 1922 at the age of 65.

Johannes is buried at the Trochu Lutheran Cemetery.
