Biography

The Schwartz family arrived in New York Harbor on August 21, 1933. Thus, John R. Schwartz's mother would have been pregnant while on the trans-Atlantic voyage.

The 1870 US Census identified John R. Schwartz of Lancaster as a "Merchant & Grocer."

By the late 1870s, John R. Schwartz was a dry goods merchant in the Village of Lancaster. Advertisements in the Lancaster Star from 1877-1879 described his establishment as:

J.R. Schwartz, Cheap Cash Store, Lancaster, N.Y.
My motto is live and let live
Dry goods a specialty

Items from the Lancaster newspaper follow.

"The undersigned will commence his closing out sale on the 1st of July and continue every day until all sold. The stock comprises Dry Goods, Yankee Notions, Groceries, Crockery, Stone Ware, Hats & Caps, Wall Papers, and General Merchandise, which will be sold at the lowest possible price, regardless of cost. J. R. Schwartz." (Lancaster Star July 3, 1879)

"Mr. John Schwartz has rented a building in Batavia, where he contemplates opening a grocery store." (Lancaster Star, Jan. 29, 1880)

"Notice to Debtors: All persons indebted to me will please call and settle their accounts as soon as possible, as I am out of business and wish to close up my book accounts. All accounts not settled by the 20th of February I shall be obliged to give to an officer for collection. John R. Schwartz." (Lancaster Star, Feb. 5, 1880)

The 1880 US Census found John R. Schwartz and his family living on Cherry street in Batavia. His occupation was listed as a "retail grocer."

"J. R. Schwartz, of Batavia, was in town yesterday." (Lancaster Times, Mar 18, 1881)

"Mr. J. R. Schwartz of Batavia was in town last Monday. After April 15th, his address will be Lancaster." (Lancaster Times, Mar 23, 1882)

"I herewith respectfully announce to the citizens of Lancaster and surrounding towns that I will be prepared to renovate feathers with steam on and after May 1st 1882. Will also keep on hand Genesee Co. Flour and Wiard’s patent malleable Iron Beam Chilled Plow, and the Automatic Hand Corn Planter, Phosphate Guano, etc. Please leave orders at my house cor. R. R. and Pleasant St. Lancaster. John R. Schwartz." (Lancaster Times, July 27, 1882)

"Mr. J. R. Schwartz has accepted the agency of a leading nursery house and can offer any thing in that line at half the usual prices. Grape vines a specialty." (Lancaster Times, Sep 7, 1882)

An Advertisement in the March 23rd, 1883 issue of the Lancaster Times stated: "J.R. Schwartz, prop. of the 'Lancaster House,' dealer in Liquors and cigars; agent for the Wiard's chilled plows and automatic corn planters; also dealer in Nursery stock, Berries and grape vines a specialty, W. Main St., near R.R., Lancaster, N.Y."
