Germany & Immigration

Dorothea Christiana Augusta Schwarz was born to Friederich Adrian and Christine Schwarz^[1] on 17 Mar 1829^[2] in Germany.^[3]

She married Johann Emil Henrich Robst on 22 Jan 1852 at age 22 at the Evangelical Lutheran church rectory in Gehren, Germany.^[2]

They had four children in Germany:

Clara Henrietta born 31 Oct 1852

Albert Frederick born 13 May 1854

Hermenia Charlotte born 11 Feb 1856

Hugo August born 10 Sep 1859

Dorothea (Schwarz) Robst migrated from Germany to United States.

When their youngest son was just 11 months old, the family immigrated to the United States, sailing aboard the Ceder from Bremen, Germany. They arrived in New York on 19 Oct 1860.^[4][5]

Living in the United States

They arrived in the United States just before the Civil War and settled in Easton, Northampton County, PA. Two years later, her husband, Emil, signed up for a 9-month military term, serving from 10 Oct 1862 to 24 Jul 1863.

Afterward they had two other children.

Lydia Miriam born 25 May 1865 in Easton, Northampton County, PA, and

Ralph born 25 Jan 1872 in Newark, Essex County, NJ.^[6]

They therefore relocated to Newark sometime between when Lydia and Ralph were born. Ralph died sometime before 4 Jun 1880, as he does not appear on the 1880 census.^[7]

Dorothea filed for widow's pension on 2 Jul 1906, several weeks after her husband passed away.^[8]

Dorothea died less than two years later on 27 Mar 1908 at 24 Warwick St, Newark, Essex County, NJ - the home of her daughter Lydia.^[1] She is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, Union County, NJ.^[1][9]
