Velma Scott was born on 10 November 1914 in Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri to Henry Finis Scott (1894-1963) and Gertrude Browning (1895-1990). ^{[1] [2]}

Velma Scott married Clarence Van Wheat (1918-1980) on sometime before 1945 (because Clarence Van Wheat was married when he separated from the United States Air Force on 1 January 1945). ^{[citation needed]}
