Early Lilfe

James was born in 1877 to Lilburn Scott & Mary Berry^[1][2].

He was the oldest of eight children:

Marriage & Children

He and his wife Martha Smith lived in the “Hurricane” section of Wise, Virginia (out towards Fairgrounds Road. Martha’s family had inherited land there from the Dale’s her maternal grandmother’s family. Dales descend from an Indian by the name of Arter Dale (abt.1776-abt.1865) (see story in the Draper Manuscripts of Chief Logan handing off a young lad to pioneer settler Patrick Porter (1737-1798) of Scott County, Virginia)

James (21) married Martha Jane Smith (16) (born on 2 Jan 1882 in Wise, Virginia, United States; daughter of Noah Baldwin Smith and Sarah Caroline (Dale) Smith) on 1 Sep 1898 in Wise, Virginia, United States^[4]. Their children were:

In the 1920 census he (age 42) was the married head of household in Wise, Virginia, United States.^[27]

In the 1930 census he (age 53) was the married head of household in Wise, Wise, Virginia, United States.^[28]

In the 1940 census he (age 63) was the married head of household in Gladeville District, Wise, Virginia, United States.^[29]

In the 1950 census he (age 73) was the married head of household in Sullivan, Tennessee, United States.^[30]

End of Life

He was a good farmer and before he died he wrote some “memoirs” in the possession of family. In that he tells of an incident when he saved his brother from drowning in the Clinch River in Scott County (over near Speer’s Ferry). That brother’s grandson was the famous actor George Campbell Scott (1927-1999). He speculated how he had a role in George’s success by saving his granddad from sure and certain death.

James died on 5 Feb 1963 in Kingsport, Sullivan, Tennessee, United States, aged 85 of a cerebral embolus^[31][32].

Scott's wife Martha Jane Scott died shortly thereafter on 11 May 1964 in Kingsport, Sullivan, Tennessee, United States of the same thing.^[33]
