Biography

Sarah F Scott was born on 4 June 1844 in Carroll County, Georgia to parents Jesse M Scott and Senia P Malone. In 1849, the Scotts moved to Benton County, Alabama.

The 1850 Census reported the Scotts residing on a farm in District 28, Benton County, Alabama. Sarah was recorded here as S. F. Scott, age 6, born in Georgia.

In 1858, Benton County was renamed Calhoun County.

The 1860 Census reported the Scotts on a farm in Township 15, Range 12, Calhoun County, Alabama. Their post office was Kemp's Creek. Sarah was recorded here as Sarah Scott, age 16, born in Georgia.

Circa 1864, Sarah married Jesse F Graham, probably in Calhoun County, though no record has been found.

Jesse and Sarah had at least two children while residing in Alabama: William Graham, born circa 1865, and Eliza Ann Graham, born circa 1868.

Between 1868-1870, the Grahams moved to Texas. Their son John Henry Graham was born in Texas in May 1870.

By 1879, the Grahams left Texas after Jesse allegedly killed an intruder at their farm. The family settled in Searcy County, Arkansas. Their daughter Mary F Graham was born there in 1879.

The 1880 Census reported the Grahams and their four children on a farm in Bear Creek Township, Searcy County, Arkansas. Sarah was recorded here as Sarah Graham, age 35, born in Alabama. Her occupation was "keeping home" and it was indicated that she could neither read nor write.

The 1900 Census reported Sarah in Red River Township, Searcy County, Arkansas. She was recorded as Sarah F Graham, widowed, with Jesse having died in 1900 prior to the census. Her occupation was "farmer." Her birth date was specifically recorded as June 1844, her place of birth Alabama. Her daughter Minnie Graham, born in 1882, was the only other person in the household.

The 1900 census also recorded that Sarah was the mother of eight children with four then living. Drawing upon available records gives this list of children, numbered only for convenience and not birth order:

1. William Graham
2. Eliza Ann Graham
3. John Henry Graham
4. Mary Graham
5. Minnie Graham
6. Unknown
7. Unknown
8. Unknown

Eliza, John, Mary, and Minnie have all been confirmed as living in 1900, so it was William and the three unknown children that had died by then.

In 1901, Sarah's mother Senia Scott died in Cleburne County, Alabama. A deposition of J. M. Brown dated December 1901 listed the heirs of Mrs. Scott. It said of Sarah Graham: "...a married woman, though her husband is dead..." A Petition for Letters of Administration gave her location as, "...Sarah Graham, residing at Watts, Ark..."

Sarah was enumerated twice in Searcy County on the 1910 census. The first was dated 2 May and reported her residing in Red River Township with her son-in-law Patrick Bohannon, who had married Mary Graham. Sarah was enumerated the second time on 4 May in Wiley's Cove Township with another son-in-law, Ezekial Melton, who had married Minnie Graham. Both enumerations recorded Sarah as widowed, a mother of eight children with four then living.

The 1920 Census reported Sarah, then 76, residing on a farm in Shady Grove Township with her eldest daughter Eliza Ann, who was by then the widow of James Watts. Again, it was recorded that Sarah could neither read nor write.

Sarah died in Watts, Arkansas on 14 November 1928 from "old feeble age," per her death certificate. Her death was reported by her grandson, Lester Bohannon. Sarah was interred beside her husband Jesse at Shady Grove Cemetery in Searcy County on 18 November 1928.

Middle Name

Sarah's middle initial was recorded as F on multiple records, but no record has been found to confirm her middle name.
