William Scotting was born in Cambridgeshire, England.

William was born about 1831 in Prickwillow, Cambridgeshire, England. He was the son of Edward Scotting and Devine Crow. He was baptised, along with his older brother, John, on 26 Oct, 1834 at Littleport, Cambridgeshire, England. His family were residing at Littleport, Cambridgeshire, and his father's occupation was listed as labourer.[1]

In 1841, William appeared in the census, residing with his parents and two brothers at Mildenhall, Suffolk, England.[2]

William came to Australia aboard the vessel "David McIvor", which arrived in Sydney on 1 Sep, 1853. He was described as being aged 22 years, railway labourer, native of Prickwillow, Cambridgeshire.[4] William's parents were residing at Beck Row, Suffolk, England at this time.[5]

William married Hannah Morris in 1859 in West Maitland, New South Wales, Australia.[6]

William and Hannah had the following Children:

On 5 Dec, 1882, William appeared in the Newcastle Police Court, having been prosecuted for failing to send his children to school.[18]

Whilst working for Waratah Municipal Council in 1883, William was one of four men who complained about their working conditions, and petitioned for an increase in wages. The other three employees were Joseph Ellis, Thomas Reynolds, and Edward Gunn.[19]

In 1891, William appeared on the New South Wales Census, residing at Hexham, New South Wales, Australia. There were 3 males and 2 females living in the household.[20]

In 1901, William appeared on the electoral roll, residing at Hexham Island, Hexham, New South Wales, Australia. His occupation was listed as labourer.[21]

Also in 1901, William appeared on the NSW Census, residing at Hanbury Street, Mayfield, New South Wales, Australia. There were 2 males and 3 females living in the household.[22]

William passed away on 13 Feb, 1904.[23] He was interred on 14 Feb, 1904 in the Methodist section of Sandgate Cemetery at Sandgate, New South Wales, Australia.[24]

Newcastle Morning Herald, Sat 20 Feb 1904, Page 8:

"WE, the Undersigned, do sincerely return thanks to all kind friends who assisted us in our recent sad bereavement; also to Dr. J. L. Beeston, for his unremitting attention:- Mrs. W. Scotting and Family."[25]
