Herman Russell was born in 1812 in Conesville, Schoharie, New York. He is the son of Amasa Scovill and Rhoda Marsh.
In 1839, Herman Russell Scovill and his brother Shelden, removed from New York and settled in Stephenson County, Illinois, making them some of the earliest white settlers to live in that land. In 1871, Herman then removed with his family to the southwest part of Hamilton County, Nebraska. He and his son Daniel, settled in what then became known as the Scoville and Union Precincts along with M. Farrell, D. Kinsinger, J. E. Jackett, A. V. B. Peck, W. H. and C. M. Garrison, taking up their claims on Section 20 and 28, Town 9, Range 7; Scovill, by D. A. Scovill and D. W. Garrison, who held full possession until the spring of 1873, when they were joined by A. Murdock, J. M. Livingstone, T. D. Case and S. N. Case. Messrs. Scovill and Garrison settled on Section 24, Town 9, Range 8.

Note: In the book, "A Survey of the Scovils or Scovills in England and America; Seven Hundred Years of History and Genealogy" by Homer Worthington Brainard, it is written that the/a wife of Russell Scovill was Sarah Newman. There is no other documentation any where that supports this claim. On the other hand, numerous census records and biographical evidence of his children supports the fact that Julia A. Rogers was the one and only wife of Herman/Russell Scovill. ____________________________________________________________
