John Milton Seals was born on December 27, 1873 in White, Tennessee, United States, son of Carroll Milton Seals (1848–1913) and Mary Elizabeth Dodson (1846–1927).

John married Jennie Ottawa Lee (born on March 29, 1880 in Bledsoe, Tennessee; daughter of Anderson Leander Lee and Louisa Jane (Branham) Lee).
