Research Notes

Estimates for Date of Birth for Agnes Sears Melton: The range of birth years for the attributed children is too broad to be from a single mother. The dates of birth range from bef. 1755 (Elizabeth Melton Frazier) to 1795 (Pomphrett Melton). In order to accommodate the early date of birth of bef. 1755 for Elizabeth Melton Frazier, it has been estimated that Agnes Melton was born abt. 1739. However, this is highly problematic because the birth dates of multiple children are too late to be biologically plausible if Agnes Melton was born as early as 1739. It is not biologically plausible to have the mother’s age beyond 45 years old. The large gap in years between the birth of Elizabeth Melton bef. 1755 and the remaining children after 1770 creates doubt about the assignment of Elizabeth Melton to this family group. Finally, Agnes Melton does appear in an 1800 federal census entry, age “45 and over” indicating she was born on or before 1755. An estimated birth date between 1752-1755 fits much better with the dates of birth of the children during 1770-1795.
