Biography

"George Augustus Selwyn (5 April 1809 – 11 April 1878) was the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand. He was Bishop of New Zealand (which included Melanesia) from 1841 to 1858. His diocese was then subdivided and Selwyn was Primate of New Zealand from 1858 to 1868. Returning to Britain, Selwyn served as Bishop of Lichfield from 1868 until his death in 1878."

Background

He was the second of four sons of William Selwyn KC, Barrister, of Middlesex, and Laetitia Frances Kynaston. He was born on 5 April 1809 in Church Row, Hampstead.[1]

Education

1816 Preparatory School, Ealing.

23 Apr 1822 (under Dr John Keate, headmaster 1809-34) he was educated at Eton.[1]

He was admitted to St John's college Cambridge in 1826 and awarded the degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1842.[2]

In 1829 he was in the Cambridge crew for the first Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.[2]

22 Jun 1834 Priest.

1834 MA Cambridge.

1842 BD, DD Cambridge.

Career

Jun 1833 Curate, Boveney, Oxford.

1834 Assistant (to Isaac Gosset) Curate, Dachet and New Windsor; and tutor at Eton to Lord Edward James Herbert, Viscount Clive, and Hon George Herbert, eldest sons of Edward Herbert (1785-1848), 2nd Earl of Powis.

14 Jul 1841 wrote to Archbishop of Canterbury accepting appointment to New Zealand.

10 Oct 1841 by letters patent appointed missionary Bishop of New Zealand, with the Bishop of Sydney as Metropolitan.

17 Oct 1841 consecrated Bishop, at Lambeth Palace Chapel.

27 Sep 1858 by letters patent Metropolitan Bishop of New Zealand.

1 Dec 1867 accepted see and translated to Lichfield.

9 Jan 1868 enthroned 91st Bishop of Lichfield.

20 May 1869 resigned Bishopric of New Zealand.

Marriage and family

On 25 June 1839 he married Sarah Harriet Richardson, with issue two sons.

Death and burial

He died on 11 April 1878. He was buried in Lichfield Cathedral Churchyard.

Legacy

After his death Selwyn College was named in his honour.[2]
