Biography

Benjamin was born in 1857, at Holly Hill Plantation, Claiborne Co. MS. He was the son of Abraham Keller Shaifer Jr and Elizabeth Chamberlain Girault. On 26 Feb 1880, he married Josephine Almarinda Guice (she is the sister of his father's 2nd wife). They had 3 known children.

Note: Benjamin was only 6 years old when Grant's troops moved into Port Gibson from the MS River on their way to the Seige of Vicksburg. The first shots of the Battle of Port Gibson were fired at Holly Hill. The home is currently (Jul 2001) maintained as a State Historical Site and is incorporated into the Battle of Grand Gulf Historical Park. It is currently being restored and a re-dedication is scheduled for Oct 2007.

Ths picture was taken after one of the county fairs in which Ben had entered his swines and cattle in competition and he was wearing his prize ribbons from other fairs.

Ben married his stepmother's sister.
