MR DAVID SHANNON J. P. - It will be seen by our obituary notices that this respected gentleman died at his residence Yatara, near Stockport, on Thursday September 9. We recently reported Mr Shannon was ill, but a fatal result was not then anticipated. We condense the following from the Kapunda Herald of the 14th instant - 'It is but seven weeks since his eldest brother, Mr Abraham Shannon, was conveyed to his tomb, and now at the comparatively early age of 53, Mr David Shannon, the last surviving member of five full brothers, has passed away, (deceased's half brothers surviving him) and we do not exaggerate when we state that the news of his decease will cause sorrow to all who knew him, for his was a kindly and generous nature, and though at times he might be somewhat hasty and impetuous, yet this was amply condoned by the possession of the rare virtue of being willing and anxious to confess his error if his natural temperament had by any means for the time got the better of his judgement.
Mr Shannon was eminently a practical man, and by diligent attention to the pursuits to which he had devoted himself (agriculture and sheep farming) had not only attained a position of affluence, but had come to be regarded as an authority on all matters pertaining to those important staple Interests of the colony. Mr Shannon spent some 33 years of his life in this colony, of which almost 19 have been passed at Yatara, where he resided up to the time of his death. Mr David Shannon occupied a seat in the House of Assembly during two sessions, as the representative of the District of Light, and for very many years he was an active member of the Colonial Magistracy - whilst his time and his purse were, ever in the service of the many agricultural and kindred societies which at one time this district possessed; for many years he was President or Vice President of the Eudunda Agricultural Society, and he for one greatly regretted that that Society was allowed to become defunct.
Some years back Mr Shannon was thrown from his horse, and sustained injuries which, though at the time regarded as trifling, ultimately resulting in an affection that necessitated his undergoing the painful operation of having one of his legs amputated close to the thigh, that operation being performed, if we remember aright, on the lst of August, 4 years ago. Up to a short time before this, he had been a very active man, taking a great deal of outdoor exercise; but subsequent to this he being a very heavy man, had difficulty in walking even though aided by one of the best artificial limbs that could be procured, and as might be expected, his health suffered, though he was still able to attend to his magisterial and other duties. About 5 months since, however, he drove to Mount Rufus, being seated in his buggy for about 7 hours continuously; the weather being both damp and cold he contracted a severe cold, which settled in the lower part of the spine, and for the last 4 months he has been confined to his bed by a complication of diseases, at time suffering excruciating pain, never being able to lie down, but having to be propped up by pillows or supported by members of his family. His sufferings during the last few weeks have been extreme.
On Sunday week fatal symptoms made their appearance, and on Thursday last it became evident he could not survive much longer. At 7 pm he ceased to be conscious, and just before midnight hour sounded he passed away to another and a better world. Mr Shannon (who has been twice married) leaves a widow and a family of 5 sons (of whom the youngest is 4 years old) and 2 daughters with all of whom the utmost sympathy is felt in the irreparable loss they have sustained.
The funeral took place on Saturday last, and despite the shortness of the notice there was an attendance that testified abundantly to the esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held. At noon the Rev. P Barr held a service, after which the cortege left Yatara for the Kapunda Cemetery. The procession included about 50 well filled vehicles and 80 horsemen, the attendance being a thoroughly representative one, including most of the farmers in Mr Shannon's neighbourhood and the principal tradesmen of Eudunda, as well as a number of friends from a distance. In addition to the widow and family of the deceased, we noticed the following relatives- Messrs H Kelly J.P. , H.B.Moody, W.Shannon (executors), D., S., J. and Sol Moody, W and J Malcolm, J.A.Murray, P.M. Murray, James Kelly, John Kelly, J. Davison Sen., R.Davison, J Davison and A Adamson.... (many other brother Magistrates listed). The service at the Cemetery was conducted by the Revs P. Barr and W. Hopkins in the presence of a large concourse of spectators and the remains of the deceased gentleman were then finally deposited in their last resting place, alongside the remains of the first Mrs Shannon, though his person will be lost to view, his memory will long abide with us as that of a good, worthy, and much esteemed man.
Kapunda Sept 10 I am sorry to have to record the death of another veteran settler, Mr David Shannon, J.P., who died last night. The deceased, who was one of the first to settle in this neighbourhood, has done much for its advancement. He was greatly respected by all who came in contact with him. He leaves behind him a numerous family to mourn their loss. He had a severe illness, not being able to leave his bed for about 4 months, and during the greater part of that time not being able to lie down .
