Biography

James Sharpe was born and christened on 3 January 1825 in Measham, Derbyshire, England, the son of Samuel Sharpe and Elizabeth Kirby. In 1841, at the age of 15, he is listed as living in Measham with his parents and eight siblings: Jane, 15 (twin?), William, 13, Thomas, 10, Joseph, 8, Catherine, 6, Samuel, 5, Ann, 3, and Mary, 1.

James married Mary Evans on 24 Apr 1848 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, England. Their children are listed in the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses for Ashby de la Zouch as:

The 1881 Census for Ashby de la Zouch shows James as a widower at age 55, with his occupation listed as “Colliery Laborer”, or Coal Miner. Living in the household were four children: Harry, 18, Thomas, 15, Eliza, 11, and Ellen, 7. A Servant, Martha Berry, 42, is also listed as living there.

Some time between the 1881 and 1891 Censuses, James married another Mary, last name unknown.

The 1891 census for Ashby de la Zouch shows James, 67, living with new wife Mary, 55. By the 1901 census Mary is not listed, so perhaps she died.

In 1901, James appeared on the census at age 76, with his son Thomas, 36, daughter-in-law Sarah, 39, and two grandsons: James, 16, and John, 14. His occupation is listed as a Coal Miner Pensioner.
