Peter Sharples was an Englishman. His wife died, leaving him with a daughter and a son. He met and married Rachel Kilmer Harrop, a widow with four daughters. The Latter-day Saint missionaries had converted and baptized them and the family soon made preparations to go to Zion. His son did not go with them. They left Liverpool one midnight in 1864 and after many weary days they were in Iowa City ready to push their hand-carts across the plains. His wife Rachel became very ill and on August 28 as they approached Laramie, Wyoming, she died. She was buried that same day. They traveled on but as they camped they found Brother Sharples missing. A search party located him on September 4 lying across his wife's grave. As they attempted to put him into the wagon, he died. They buried him beside his wife Rachel.
