Biography

Sanford Joseph "Sandy" Shaw was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 9, 1929, the youngest son of Roscoe 'Ross' Shaw and Mary (Sites) Shaw. Shortly after Sandy's birth, his father accepted a new job and moved their family moved to Detroit, Michigan. Soon after, the family returned to Columbus to care for Ross' dying mother, Hannah (Decker) Shaw.

During his years at Rosary Catholic High School in Columbus, Sandy served as the vice-president of his junior class, the editor of the school's yearbook, The Rosarian, and as associate editor of the school newspaper, The Campanile. In June 1947, Sandy graduated high school along with his future wife, Alice Mulholand. The following year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army's Counterintelligence Corps and spent the next four years serving in Japan and Korea. After returning stateside, Sandy took a job as a salesman for the Schlitz Brewing Company.

Sandy and Alice were married on August 30, 1952 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Columbus, and the ceremony was officiated by the Reverend Father Leo Brehm. Following a honeymoon through the state of Michigan, they returned to Columbus and began raising a family. Their first child, Greg, was born in June 1953. In 1955, Sandy's received a promotion and was relocated to Kent, Ohio. The following year, his father passed away in Columbus.

After the birth of their second son, Tom, in August 1957, the Shaws returned to Columbus, where their only daughter, Mary, was born in November 1958. Another promotion then led to the family moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1959, where their fourth child, Bill, was born in March 1960. When an opportunity to return to Kent became available in 1961, Sandy and Alice took it without hesitation. Their last child, Bob was born there in March 1965.

At the end of 1968, Sandy left his job with Schlitz to open a tavern known as The Village Inn in the small town of Louisville, Ohio. The following year, the Shaws moved to Louisville and expanded the business by adding a restaurant, The Village Pizza Shop, next door to the tavern.

He passed away in Lakeland, Florida on March 8, 2011. [1]
