Anna (Sheer) McCoy was born in Pennsylvania.
in Pennsylvania.[1] No definitive sources have been located for her parents or siblings.

  1. Amelia Elizabeth (McCoy) Milleysack (1854 - 1889),
  2. Louisa Catherine (McCoy) Kline (~1856 - 1936),
  3. Hannah Estella (McCoy) Vandine (1858 - 1933),
  4. Mary Florence (McCoy) Gilchrist (~1861 - 1932),
  5. John Franklin McCoy (1863 - 1903),
  6. Thomas Ellsworth McCoy (~1866 - 1933),
  7. Samuel Eugene McCoy (1869 - 1941),
  8. Anna Eldora (McCoy) McGough (1871 - 1949),
  9. Rose Ruperta (McCoy) Smith (1873 - 1951), and
  10. James Alexander McCoy (1876 - 1957)

Anna passed away on August 28, 1904, in Steubenville, Ohio. She is buried in Union Cemetery in Steubenville.[1]

The earliest record of Anna Maria (Sheer) McCoy (1835 - 1904) was her marriage to James Donaldson McCoy (1831 - 1905) in 1851. [2] In 1860 the couple were living in the 1st ward of Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio. Anna was 24 years old and was born in Pennsylvania. Her husband James was 28 years old, a blacksmith, and was born in Ohio. James had a personal wealth of $100. Their three daughters, Amelia Elizabeth, age 6, Louisa Catherine, age 4, and Hannah Estella, age 1, were living with their parents. Amelia Elizabeth was born in Virginia, and Louisa and Hannah were born in Ohio. None of the girls had attended school in the previous year.[3]

From May 2, 1864, to September 2, 1864, James served as a private in the 157th Ohio Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army[4] James was a "Hundred Days Soldier." These were men who were recruited for 100 days to defend rear positions in order to release regular troops to join Grant's push to Richmond.[5]

In 1870, Anna Maria and James were still in Steubenville, Anna was 36 and born in Pennsylvania. Unusually the $500 value of the real estate that the family owned is listed with Anna.[6] Although this may have been a mistake when she died she apparently had an estate sufficiently large enough to be probated.[7] Unfortunately a copy of the probate records has not been located. James was 40 years old, a blacksmith, and born in Ohio. He was able to vote. There were now seven children, all living with their parents. Amelia was 16 and born in Virginia, and Louisa was 14, and born in Ohio as were the remaining children. Eleven-year-old (Hannah) Estella was the only child to attend school in the previous year. Mary was nine years old, Frank, seven, Ellsworth, four, and Eugene, one.[6]

The 1880 census found Anna and James living on Permar's Run in the 2nd Ward of Steubenville. Anna was 44 years old and was born in Pennsylvania as were both her parents. James was 50, a watchman, and was disabled. He was born in Ohio. Both parents were born in Pennsylvania. Of their ten children, seven were living at home all of whom were born in Ohio. Eighteen-year-old Florence was "at home." Sixteen-year-old John Franklin was an apprentice stone mason. Thirteen-year-old Ellsworth and eleven-year-old Eugene attended school. The three youngest children, Anna, 9, Rosa, 7, and James 3, did not attend school in the previous year.[8] Their oldest daughter, Amelia Elizabeth (McCoy) Milleysack (1854 - 1889), was married and living nearby in Steubenville, Ohio, with her husband and three children.[9] Louisa recently had married and was living with her husband in Steubenville.[10] Hannah Estella, aka, Stella, was living with her husband and daughter, also in Steubenville.[11]

The 1890 census was largely destroyed in a fire, thus we have few records for this period.[12] On April 23, 1889, at the age of 34, Anna and James' oldest daughter, Amelia Elizabeth (McCoy) Milleysack (1854 - 1889), died of pneumonia[13][14] following the birth of her son.[15] Tragically Amelia's son died of spinal bifida seven months later.[16]

The 1900 census provides a good deal more information about Anna's life. The couple were living in a house that they owned. It is on Lincoln Avenue in Steubenville, Ohio. They have been married for 49 years. Anna is 65, was born in July of 1834, and was born in Ohio as were both of her parents. Anna reported giving birth to 11 children, but only 9 were living. One of the births and deaths must have occurred in the ten-year period between census records as no record of an 11th child has been located. James was 71 years old, a laborer, was born in March 1829, and was born in Ohio. Both parents were born in Pennsylvania. The only child living with them was Anna Eldora (McCoy) McGough (1871 - 1949) who was 28 and single. She was born in December 1871.[17] Mary Florence (McCoy) Gilchrist (~1861 - 1932) was living with her husband and two children in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.[18] John Franklin McCoy (1863 - 1903) married in 1886,[19] but no census record for him for 1890 has been identified.Kline-1865 18:14, 2 October 2022 (UTC) Thomas Ellsworth McCoy (~1866 - 1933) was living with his wife and children in Taylor Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania.[20] Samuel Eugene McCoy (1869 - 1941) was living with his wife and their children in Steubenville.[21] Rose Ruperta (McCoy) Smith (1873 - 1951) was living in Steubenville with her husband and daughter.[22] James Alexander McCoy (1876 - 1957) married in 1897[23] but no reliable source can be located for him in a 1990 census.

Anna Maria (Sheer) McCoy (1835 - 1904) died in Steubenville, Ohio, on August 8, 1904.[24] She is buried in Union Cemetery in Steubenville.[1][25] Her estate was submitted for probate on November 2, 1904,[7]' Her husband, James Donaldson McCoy (1831 - 1905), died on May 25, 1905.[26] James is buried beside Anna in the Union Cemetery in Steubenville, Ohio.[27]

Research Notes

The passenger list for the ship Samuel Fox lists an Anna Sheer as a passenger who came from Wurtenberg.[28] The age is correct for our Anna. However, there is no other evidence that she was born anywhere but in Pennsylvania which is what she reported for all but one census.

I searched Ancestry.com and Family Search for probate records for Anna Marie. Although I did not find her probate documents, I found her mentioned in James' probate records. He received $750 from her estate.[29]

I searched Ancestry and Family Search for both John Franklin and Frank and for James Alexander.
