William H. Shelton was born in 1846 in Norfolk, Virginia, United States.

William (26) married Annie H. Grant (19) (born in 1853 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada) on September 19, 1872 in Portsmouth, Rockingham, New Hampshire, United States.^[1] Their son was Eugene Shelton (1876– ).

In 1880, his widow Annie Shelton lived with their children in Portsmouth. Her daughter Cora Shelton was born in 1879/1880, so William probably passed away in 1879. His wife and children are listed as mulatto in the 1880 census.
