Vinton R. Shepard, 83 years old, founder of the Court Index in 1892, died last night at his home in Kemper Lane Hotel. He suffered a heart attack April 1.
Mr. Shepard was born in Bucyrus, Ohio, May 11 1850, son of a Baptist minister. Shortly afterward his family moved to a pioneer Minnesota community, but in 1870 moved to Granville, Ohio, so the children could be educated at Denison University, from which Mr. Shepard was graduated in 1876, having been a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and a member, by election, of Phi Beta Kappa.
Following his graduation, Mr. Shepard became a member of the staff of the old Commercial Gazette in Cincinnati, then directed by Murat Halstead. He was assigned to cover the courthouse riot of 1884. During the latter part of his 16 years of service with the paper he was the city editor.
In 1892, with the late Scott Small and others, he founded the Court Index, and in 1903 established the Ohio Law Reporter, with the late William H. Anderson, law book publisher. In 1929 he incorporated the Court Index and retired from active management, but continued as President of the Ohio Law Reporter Company until his death.
His wife, formerly Miss Sarah Eunice Booth, whom he met at Denison and married three years after coming to Cincinnati, died last July.
Mr. Shepard served as trustee of Denison University for more than 30 years. For 45 years he was a member of the Baptist congregation at Wyoming, Ohio.
