Biography

Ephraim was born about 1841.

He was listed in the 1850 census of Yaney County, at age 12, along with six siblings. Head of household was his mother, Dorothy Jones Shepherd. The household included his grandmother, Dorothy Hampton Jones, age 79.[1]

He married Frances J. Blankenship in 1858. The 1960 census found them with one child, Cordelia, in Yancey County, served by the Burnsville post office. Ephraim was farming.[2]

Their children (with spouses) are the following:

Cordelia Shepherd (Benjamin T. Banks), 1859 - 1948 Louisa Shepherd, 1861 - after 1869 Lorina "Rhina" Lucretia Shepherd (George M. Roland), 1863 - 1938 Amanda J. "May" Shepherd (James Garrett Arrowood), 1866 - 1950 Demeris Sarah Shepherd (Andrew J. Austin, Jess Ray), 1867 - 1956.

Ephraim served in the CSA military. Records indicate that he was a Private in Company C of the N. C. 16th Infantry regiment.[3]

Note: The 1870 U. S. Census lists Frances Shepherd, age 30, as the head of household with the following children (all female): Cordelia, 11; Louisa, 9; Lorina, 7; May/Mary, 5, and Demeris, 2. This Shepherd household is listed as house/family # 126 after the Barnett Blankenship house/family #125. In 1880, Amanda, 14, was residing in the household of her uncle Calvin C. Blankenship and his wife Margaret Elkins Blankenship, also in Caney River, Yancey Co NC.[4]
