Biography

Notables Project
John Sherman is Notable.
"(Samuel W.) Allerton lobbied heavily for founding a Union stockyards facility in Chicago. Working his connections in the railroad industry and the public through letters published in the Chicago press, he was successful. Installed as the first manager of the new stockyards was Allerton's cousin, John Brill Sherman. As his livestock empire grew in the 1860s in Chicago and Pittsburgh, Allerton's focus remained centered on shipping meat animals to New York City." [1]
"In 1849 the gold excitement took him to California; in 1850 he returned eastward and located on a farm in Kendall Co., Ill., later he removed to Chicago where he became a member of the commission firm of Black and Sherman. In 1855 he operated the Bull's Head Stock Yards, and in 1856 the Myrick Yards. At that time there were four different stockyard markets in Chicago, and he it was who conceived the idea of consolidation which resulted in 1865 in the organization of the great Union Stock Yard and Transit Co. of Chicago. He early became General Superintendent of the company and continued to be for many years; later was Vice President and General Manager, and then President."[2]
