Biography

Byron Ames was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1893, the son of George and Jennie Shewbridge.^[1]

He was admitted to the Massachusetts School for the Feeble-Minded in Waltham in 1905, when he was 13 years old.^[2] His brother, George J. Shewbridge, was also a long-term resident of the instition, having been admitted in 1890. Byron remained at the hospital until at least 1930,^[3][4][5] by which time it had been remained the Walter E. Fernald State School.

In 1917, at the time of the war draft registration, he was described as being of a medium build, with brown eyes and dark brown hair.^[6]

In 1940, he was a patient at Taunton State Hospital,^[7] a psychiatric care facility. He died in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in 1970.^[8] He was 78 years old.
