William was the son of Dewey Barnhill and William Elmer Shields.
He is buried in Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park in Fort Worth, Texas. [1]

William Elmer 'Tex' Shields Jr. 76, retired president and CEO of Shields Industrial Supply, passed away from this life Tuesday, Sept 2, 1997, at his home.
William was born January 2, 1921, in Loraine. He was a credit to his family, community, can country. He graduated from Paschal High School in 1938 and was to be chairman of his 60th class reunion in 1998. He attended Arlington State College, which is now the University of Texas at Arlington.
In 1942, Elmer enlisted in the Army Air Forces in the 96th Bomb Group and the 337th Bomb Squadron, where he was a radio operator on the B-17s, holding the rank of tech sergeant. In February 1943, he was shot down, captured and held as a prisoner of war in Germany, until his return home in the spring of 1945. Upon return home, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Katherine Elliott.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and a 50-year member of the Mosiah Shrine Temple in Fort Worth.
Elmer was a past commander of the Fort Worth Power Squadron and a member of Silver Creek United Methodist Church in Azle. cont. with survivors. [2]
