Biography
Thomas was born about 1545, estimated from date of marriage. His father was also Thomas, mentioned in a deed of lease of 10 July 1585: Demise for 60 years of land in Mirfield, between 1 Thomas Shepley, junior, of Mirfield, yeoman, and Jane his wife; and Edward Shepley, younger brother of Thomas, and Agnes his wife 2 Thomas Shepley, senior, of Mirfield, yeoman, their father.[1]
Thomas Shepley married Jane Hepworth on 16 January 1569/1570 at Mirfield. Edward Shepley, Thomas's younger brother, and Jane's sister Agnes were married the same day.[2][3]
Thomas died at Mirfield in 1609 and was buried there on 21 August 1609.[4]
Research Notes
Thomas Shepley of Halifax, son of Robert, born 1543, is a different person. On 10 July 1585 a lease document was drawn up giving family relationships: Demise for 60 years of land in Mirfield between "1 Thomas Shepley, junior, of Mirfield, yeoman, and Jane his wife; and Edward Shepley, younger brother of Thomas, and Agnes his wife 2 Thomas Shepley, senior, of Mirfield, yeoman, their father".[5]
Thomas is described as "the younger" on his children's births which would also imply an elder Thomas.
Date of death - Both Thomas and his father were alive in 1585 at the time of the deed. The first relevant burial after that is "Thomas Shepley the elder" 21 August 1596, which is likely to be the father. Jane Shepley is mentioned as Thomas's widow on a deed of November 1611. "Bargain and Sale by Jane Shepley of Mirffeld (Mirfield), widow of Thomas Shepley deceased and one of the two daughters and co heirs of William Hopworth deceased, Thomas Shepley of Mirffeld son and heir of the said Jane, Edward Shepley of Mirffeld, yeoman, and Agnes his wife the other daughter and co heir of William Hopworth, to Richard Thorpp of Hopton in the township and parish of Mirffeld, yeoman, of sufficient common of pasture in Mirffeld for 80 sheep, 16 beasts and 4 horses, with power to plough sow with corn and enclose such rateable or respective part of the said commons as may in future be ploughed, sown or enclosed by agreement between the lord of the manor and the freeholds of Mirffeld"[6], and this fits with the date of death 1609.
