Biography

Abraham was born in 1821. He was the son of Jacob Shirk and Sophia. He was the youngest of 8 children. He passed away in 1902 and was buried at the Bardolph Cemetery in Bardolph, McDonough County, Illinois[1]

At the age of 26 in 1850, Abraham is single, living with the Stenger family in Peters, Franklin, Pennsylvania. It is unclear of his relationship with the family. His occupation is listed as a Clerk. Caroline Stenger is not listed as being a part of this family group. [2]

Abraham married Caroline Stenger in about 1851. No documentation has been found other than the report on the 1900 US Federal Census where the couple reported they had been married 49 years and had 9 children with 6 surviving. (1900-49=1851). We are only able to identify 7 children from the census reports. Abraham was a farmer.

In the 1860 Federal Census, the family had move to Littleton, Schuyler, Illinois where Abraham owned real estate valued at $4,860 and had a personal estate value at $1,100. In additional to his immediate family of his spouse and 4 children, 2 additional persons Mary Long 60 years old and Clem Long 17 years old was living with the family. It is unclear of their relationship, however both were born in Pennsylvania.

In July, 1863 Abraham registered for the draft for the US Civil War. He was residing in Littleton, Schuyler County, Illinois and was 42 years old at the time.[7]

By 1900, Abraham with his wife and 2 daughters, Jesse and Carrie and 1 grandaughter, Carries daughter Gladys. were living at 16 Jackson Street, in Bardolph Village, Macomb township, McDonough County Illinois.
