Biography

Reginald Richard Sholl was an Australian lawyer, judge, diplomat and commentator.[1] He was born on 8 October 1902 at Melbourne East, Victoria, Australia, the eldest of six children to Alice Maud Sholl and Reginald Frank Sholl.[1][2]

Having attended Melbourne Grammar School and the University of Melbourne,[3] In 1924 He was a Law Student at Trinity College, Carlton Sth; Melb. University, and won a Rhodes scholarship and got his doctorate at Oxford. He then travelled from Melbourne to Hull on the “Morton Bay”, arriving 26Aug1924. Reginald was selected as Victorian Rhodes scholar for 1924.[4] Whilst studying at Oxford University he lived at New College, and learned to play rugby.[5]

Reginald wed Hazel Bradshaw on 27 July 1927 at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, England.[6] . He also went to USA from Southampton returning 4May1926. [Both travelled USA-UK with 4 month stay].

Reginalds’ children by Hazel:- are 1. Daughter Patricia Mary, born 20May1929, who married 17Feb 1950 to John Holroyd Warne PERMAZEL, born 29Feb1925, Died 13Jun2015 (F/M Glynne T.PERMAZEL/Rosalind A.A. WARNE). They had grand/daughter Penelope Susan on 8Mar1951. . .2. .On 16 November 1931, the couple welcomed a son, John Reginald at Hopetoun Private Hospital.[7]. . . Next were Twins, 3. Felicity Ann, & 4. David Kenwyn born 9Aug1933 at Hopetoun Priv. Hosp. Ann married Graham KIDDLE 13Feb1956 @ Melb Grammar Chapel. David, junior executive with A.N.A., married Gwyneth GEARY, dental hosp. nurse. . In 1931 with wife Hazel they lived at 11 Addison St, St Kilda Central, occ. Barrister. 1936 at 390 Glenferrie Rd Glenferrie. 1937 at 24 Somers Ave Malvern. 1942 at 9 Manor Grv. Caulfield. 1954 at 24 Somers Ave Malvern, occ. Judge. He was sworn in on 1Feb1950 as Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria.[1] In 1952, he suggested it would be appropriate to order corporal punishment for violent crimes.[8] His wife Hazel died 14Feb1962 age 61, #3778. (Victoria bdm records) & was buried at Springvale cemetery on 18Feb1962. In 1966 He remarried & Reginald picked up an overseas posting, serving the Australian Government as Australian Consul-General in New York.[9] In 1970, Reginald joined the committee of the Overseas Services Bureau. The Bureau was responsible for the Australian Volunteers Abroad scheme.[10] In 1974 and 1975 he conducted a Royal Commission into airline services to Western Australia.[1] . Then with wife (2) Anna in 1968 they lived at 65 Walsh St Domain. occ. Consol General. 1972 at 31 Power St Toorak, occ. Legal Consol. 1977 at 11/46 Lansell Rd Toorak. They retired to Qld. In 1980 lived at 70 The Promenade, Is. Capri, Surfers Paradise. Many newspaper reports contain his name when representing clients in Criminal, & Industrial Courts.

Reginald died on 7 August 1988 at Southport, Queensland.[1]
