Biography

Susanna "Susan" Shoults was born about 1806, the daughter of Philip Shoults and Elizabeth (Johnston) Shoults. Though the Last Will and Testament for her father has not been located, land Deeds indicate that his property was divided among his four children, after his death in 1811. Susan's elder brothers, James and Johnston shared 194 acres of the northeast portion of the property, Susanna inherited 160 acres of the south central region and her sister Anna Barbara inherited 160 acres of the north central region plus 94.5 acres of the southwest region. [1]

In 1821, Susan married Elijah Wease and they had eight children, born in Jefferson county, Missouri:

  • John Edgar Wease, born December 23, 1825, died May 30, 1891 In House Springs, Missouri, married Anna Eliza Hildebrand
  • David R. Wease, born 1831/32, died 1880, in Missouri, married Rosalie Menard
  • Amelia Wease, born 1833 Jefferson County, Missouri
  • James Wease, born 1835 Jefferson County, Missouri
  • Susan Wease, born 1838 Jefferson County, Missouri 20 May 1899 (1880?) Dunning Cemetery, so. of Poplar Bluff, Butler, Missouri, United States
  • Martha Wease, born circa 1840, died 20 May 1899, married Jacob M. Schultz
  • Missouri J. Wease, born 1841, married John Schultz
  • Melissa E Wease, born October 19, 1846, married Nelson Shoults

Elijah died about 1846. Susanna is listed as the property owner on the 1850 Jefferson County, Missouri Agricultural Census and the U.S. Census that was taken in 1850. Susanna was a widow on the date that she sold her 160 acre tract to her son John Wease, via Deed K-138, dated November 18, 1850. A later "Deed of Correction" to this Deed, dated May 22, 1869, confirmed the sale.

On September 22, 1853, in Jefferson county, Missouri, Susan married William Chandler, [2] who died before 1867. In the 1869 deed Susan is attested to be "single and unmarried." A transcription of the two deeds may be found at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mojchs/FamilyHistories/ShoultsInJeffCo.pdf, beginning on page 21.
