Biography

PARENTAGE

Nicholas Shrum III (b.1803), assumed to be son of Nicholas Shrum Jr (b.1765)
Basis for assumption:
  • The roman numeral III implies his father's name was Nicholas.
  • The author of "History of Shrum family" on page 5 says he added Nicholas as son of Peter Shrum on assumption because he was born in Tennessee.
  • Peter Shrum was only 16 years old in 1803, and Sarah was age 13, so it is unlikely they are the parents.
  • Nicholas Shrum(b.1765) was in Smith County in 1806 when he sold land. Therefore it is likely Nicholas had children born in Tennessee.
  • The comments about land records listed for Nicholas III in the book "History of Shrum family" does not make sense, because Nicholas III was only age 13 years old in 1816. However, Nicholas Shrum(b.1765), is the most likely candidate to purchase 640 acres of land at age 51.
  • Peter's 1820 census does not have an age bracket for males age 16-25 (the age of Nicholas III in 1820).
  • Nicholas Shrum(1765) and Nicholas Shrum(1803), both have 1830 census records in Lincoln County Missouri.
  • The children listed for Nicholas III in book "History of Shrum family" are confirmed by census as children of Nicholas Shrum(1803).
  • Census records confirm Nicholas Shrum(b.1803) was in Oregon on census for 1850 and 1860, and his birthplace is listed as Tennessee.
Assuming the correct father has been listed, then the mother of Nicholas Shrum III (b.1803) would either be Lidia Beck or Elizabeth Huffstetler. The 1800 marriage of Lidia Beck is questionable, since Elizabeth Huffstetler may have been alive as late as 1813.
Note: 1813 represents the date Elizabeth Huffstetler-Shrum was listed in her father's (Michael Huffstetler) 1813 Estate Probate.

NOTES 2

Some genealogies show Nicholas Shrum III (b.1803) as son of Peter Shrum(b.1787) and Sarah Lovelady.
However, it appears more likely he is the son of Nicholas Shrum(1765).
This mix-up probably originated from references in "History of the Shrum family" James R. Shrum, Sr

We added the name Nicholas Shrum to this list by assumption for we have a sketch of history on a Nicholas Shrum that was born in Tennessee and moved to Missouri, then on to Oregon and reared a family.
Page 13:
Nicholas Shrum, III, son of Peter Shrum, son of Nicholas Shrum, Jr., son of Nicholas Shrum, pioneer to North Carolina, Nicholas Shrum was born in Smith County, Tenn.
We assume this is one of the missing sons of Peter Shrum that Cal Gregory gave in the account of the Shrum Family, April 26, 1951 of the Peter Shrum family.
I contacted Mr. Dewayne Shrum of Oregon who Is a direct descendant of Nicholas Shrum. He states that he was born In Tennessee. Place of birth unknown to him.
I searched the deed records in Carthage, Tenn., County seat of Smith County. I found there a deed book dated from 1801 to 1808. There was a transaction of a deed for 640 acres of land on Dixon Creek from the Shepard Grant No. 2308 from John L. Martin to Nicholas Shrum recorded in 1816. It stands to reason that this could not have been the previous Nicholas, for there is a hundred years or more between the two Nicholas Shrums.
Nicholas Shrum migrated to Missouri In 1820. He led one of the first Wagon Trains west into Oregon Territory, He lived his days out in Marlon County and Douglas County, Oregon. He was the father of six
