John Rudicile Shultz was born circa 1769, in North Carolina, a son of Johan Martin Shultz, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, and Daughter of the American Revolution Ancestor #A103295.
On 15 September 1796, John Shultz was listed in the "Store Account Book" for Sevier County, Tennessee. This store account book is in the Special Collection at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. John R. Shults moved to Rhea County, Tennessee from Sevier County, Tennessee circa 1805/1806 and then went to Franklin County, Illinois from Rhea County, Tennessee circa 1815.Later appeared in Weakley County, Tennessee for 1828-1834. Made final trek to Missouri circa 1835 and from there to Texas circa 1845. [1] [2]
John is found on the United States census of 1850, living in Henderson county, Texas, with his daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, and her husband, John Damron. [3] His name is transcribed on the FamilySearch page as John B. Shultz, however, the image of the census report may be viewed on FamilySearch.org at the link given. The middle initial should be "R" and the way that the clerk wrote his "R" may be compared with the "R" in Wilkinson Rutherford, immediately below John, or with Robert M. Gray, near the top of the page.
From Jim Shults's Files: "John apparently moved to Sevier County around 1795 with his Mother and his brothers, Valentine and Martin. Around 1805, he relocated to Rhea County, Tennessee and in 1815 moved on to Franklin County, Illinois. In 1834, he was in Weakley County, Tennessee and in 1835, in Missouri. He moved to Texas about 1845. Part of the information on him and his descendants is fromMrs. Tammi Ramsey, Coalina, California, and from LDS Ancestral Files. The following newspaper article is courtesy of Ms. Vallie Terrell, Marble Falls, Texas: *"From the 'Arkansas Gazette and Democrat' of Friday, 23 Aug 1850 "'A VETERAN - Judge Schultz of Arkansas County, called on us, a few days ago, and subscribed for our papers, to be sent to his father Major John R. Schultz, residing in Kaufman County, Texas. Maj. Schultz, we understand, is a Polander, by birth, but emigrated when quite young, to the American Colonies previous to the Revolutionary War, and, with his father, uncle, and four brothers, participated in the Battle of King's Mountain, where the subject of this notice received a slight wound. He also participated in several other battles during that eventful period, as well as in a number of Indian fights. Although upwards of 90 years of age, he possesses the activity of most men, not half his age, and still indulges in his favorite recreation of hunting deer and buffalo, of which he has killed several of both within the last year or two.'
Note: "The Judge Schultz referred to above was John R's son, John M. Shults. There are several inconsistencies in the newspaper article. I've no idea how John R. came by the title of 'Major.' He didn't immigrate to the Colonies but was born here, and while his father, Dr. Martin Shultz, was at the Battle of Kings Mountain, there's NO indication that John or any of his brothers were. The newspaper article refers to John R. residing in Kaufman County, Texas, but in the 1850 federal census John R. was living in the home of his son-in-law, John Damron, in Henderson County, Texas, and his occupation was listed as 'cooper' (barrell maker).
