  • SIMMONS, John: Leg.- To my wife, Rebekah, negroes, household goods, horses etc. To son William all the land where I now live, an all the Land in Brunswick County, and cattle and stock on that land, John Simmons, all my Land in Isle of Wight County ...All the rest of my estate to be equally divided between my sons, William and John and daughter Mary Simmons. Friend Mr Robert Gray. Wife Rebekah and son, Wm. Exers. Wit. Benj. Simmons, John Davis, Jos. Andrews. Made 18 Oct 1737. Prob. 19 April 1738 Wit Benjamin Simmons, John Davis, Joseph Andrus.[1]
  • 1744 Christopher Mooring (jr?) who married Rebecca Simmons, widow of John Simmons, is the court appointed guardian to the children of John to wit: William, John, and Mary, infants under the age of 14. Surry Court Orders, Lib. of VA Reel 30, page 33.[2]

The above estate was for John Simmons, Jr. The Junior indicates that he was not born in 1675 and this John was not the son of William.

Indenture made the 8th day of March, 1764, between William Simmons of Nottoway Parish, Southampton County, and Thomas Williamson, for 500 pounds, conveying 680 acres, on South side of the Great Creek, beginning at a whitewood at the Creek at a corner tree of Col. Henry Harrison's, and adjoining land of Richard Lewis, and according to a Patent granted to John Simmons, Jr., of Surry County, dated October 13, 1727. Witnesses were R. Kello, D. Fisher, Thomas Clements, and Benja. Clements, Jr. Indenture, Receipt, and Memorandum of Livery of Seizin were proved in Court on March 26, 1764, by the oaths of Richard Kello, Daniel Fisher, and Benjamin Clements Jr.

This was William, son of John Simmons, selling the land his father had left to him in his will. The will referred to the land as being in Surry later Southampton. The land William was selling came from this grant.
