Funeral services for the Rev. H.D. "Bud" Simmons, 84, of Hopkinsville, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Goodwin Funeral Home in Cadiz. Bro. Christopher Page of Julien Baptist Church will officiate the services. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Delmont Baptist Church Cemetery in Trigg County.
Mr. Simmons died of natural causes at 3:15 a.m. Sunday, January 9, 2011 at a local nursing home in Hopkinsville.
Mr. Simmons was born January 12, 1926 in Trigg County. He was the son of the late Isaac Shellie and Nevada Jackson Dawson Simmons.
He was a World War II veteran, retired carpenter and minister. He was a member of the Julien Baptist Church, where he was licensed to preach in 1956. He had served as interim pastor at several local churches and conducted Wednesday evening services at Brookfield Manor Nursing Home for 34 years before he retired.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Shirley R. and Billy Ezell of Trigg County; daughter Brenda Thompson of Hopkinsville; six grandchildren, Kevin Simmons, Heather Borders and husband John, Scott Thompson and wife Barbara, Darrell Thompson and wife Kelly, Krista Silvy and husband Neil, all of Hopkinsville, Holly Morrow and husband Dumaka Shabazz of Antioch, Tenn.; 11 great-grandchildren, Derek, Cheyenne and Amber Borders, Julie Word, Austin Thompson, Eric and Alana Silvy, all of Hopkinsville, Jevaugn, Mecca and Medina Shabazz of Antioch, Tenn., Kisha and husband Chris Gibbs of Clarksville, Tenn.; four great great-grandchildren, Nathan and Killian Gibbs of Clarksville, Tenn., Addisyn and Kenson Word of Hopkinsville; two brothers, Eugene Simmons of Atlanta, Ga., and Bobby Dell Simmons of Hopkinsville.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Rogers Simmons. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded by 11 brothers, Herbert Carroll, John Wesley, Lacy Floyd, Amos Vernon, unnamed triplets, Cecil Ray, Grady Fay, Maxie Smith, and Beryl Boyd Simmons; four sisters, Velma Louise Solomon, Emma Naomi Meacham, Nova Mae Green, and Willodean Wyatt.
Pallbearers were his grandsons. Doug Brewer, vocalist, and Mary Elizabeth Russell, pianist, provided the music.
Memorials may be made for Bibles through Gideon's International or to Julien Baptist Church, Gracey, Kentucky.
