Biography
Hugh Simpson was born in the civil parish of Tarbolton, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Hugh married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Simpson in April of 1901. He worked in coal mines to support his family.
In July of 1906, Hugh, Lizzie and their daughter arrived in the New York, USA on the ship Furnessia. The ship's manifest stated that Hugh had $25 dollars and was going to stay with brother-in-Law Robert McCracken.
By 1910, Hugh had moved his family into a house in White Township in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. In 1914, both Hugh and Elizabeth became U.S. citizens. In 1920, their residence was still in White Township and Hugh was still a coal miner.
At some point, Lizzie returned to Scotland. She was in Scotland when her father Edward passed away in March of 1936, as mentioned in his obituary. Prior to that, in 1931, Hugh appears alone on the manifest for the ship Cameronia, returning to the U.S. from Scotland.
In September of 1936, Hugh was living in the borough of Creekside in the county of Indiana, Pennsylvania. Hugh passed away after battling cancer at the age of 52.
