Biography

Thomas was born before 1820. He is the son of Moses Simpson and Fanny Hartley. He was christened on 25 Jun 1820 in St Mary Magdalene, Broughton in Furness, Lancashire, England[1]

1840: ”BROUGHTON-IN-FURNESS.-Mr John Chalmers, of the Wool Pack inn, Broughton-in-Furness, held his sports on Saturday last. They commenced with a quoiting match for a sovereign, which was won by John Chalmers and Thomas Hartley Simpson, beating John Croshy, of Broughton, and Thomas Wilkinson, of Bouth; a foot steeple chase for 10s. next took place, which was won by Matt. Jackson, of Green. Millom. - Thos. Woodward, of Broughton, second. This part of the diversion being quite new in canny lile Broughton, it was a deal thought about, and when it came off was very much enjoyed, and caused no little diversion and mirth. The wrestling for a belt and a purse of money was won by Thos. Dawson, of Broughton After the sports, nearly one hundred persons sat down at the Wool Pack inn, to as good a dinner as a hungry man need wish for.”[2]

Thomas Hartley Simpson, of full age, Woodturner, Bachelor of Broughton, son of Moses Simpson, Woodturner, married Ann Dickinson, of full age, Spinster of Broughton, daughter of Thomas Dickinson, Woodcutter on 7 Feb 1842 in St Mary Magdalene, Broughton in Furness, Lancashire, England. The witnesses were Richard Baisbrow, Nancy Simpson, Isc. Hudson.[3]

He took over his father’s business in 1869:

”NOTICE. - MOSES SIMPSON, of Broughton Mills, Broughton-in-Furness, Brush Stick Manufacturer, and general Wood Turner, &c., returns his sincere thanks to his numerous friends for the favours conferred upon him for the last 54 years, and begs most respectfully to announce that the business will in future be carried on by his son, T. Hartley Simpson. N.B. - Scythe Poles, Hayrakes and all descriptions of Wood Turning done on the shortest notice. Broughton Mills, July 28th, 1869.”[24]

In 1882, he appeared in a local directory:

”Simpson Thos. Hartley, general woodturner, and beerhouse, Miners' Arms, Broughton Mills”[25]

He died in 1896 at the age of 76[26] and was buried in Broughton in Furness on 31 Oct 1896.[27]

He left a Will dated 1895.[28]
