Isabel Ann Simpson, daughter of George and Clarine Antoine, was born in Kamloops on 8 Feb 1928. She was indigenous, of Syilx or Okanagan (through her father) and Shushwap (through her mother) descent.[1]
At the time of the 1931 Census, 3-year-old Isobel Annie was living on the Okanagan Indian Reserve #7 with her family - parents George and Clarine Antoine, brother Ernest Billy (5), sisters Susan Eliza (7) and Mary (2), as well as an adopted brother, Harry Williams (13). They were a farming family and belonged to the Roman Catholic faith.[2]
Isabel met her husband, Francis, when he was stationed at the Vernon Military Camp for training during WWII. Two of Isobel's cousins, Thomas Victor and Percy Simpson, were also stationed at Vernon. It is likely that the three men knew one another and that was how Francis was introduced to Isobel.[3]After their marriage they went to live in his home community of Cedar (Nanaimo).[4] She had 6 sons and 4 daughters with him. At the time of her death she was living on Raines Rd. in Cedar (Nanaimo).[1]
Isabel died on 5 Oct 1972 at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. She was buried in Cedar Valley Memorial Garderns on 11 Oct 1972. Her death was informed by her son Jeffery James Thomas who was then living at 867 Hamilton St. in Vancouver.[1]
Her obituary was printed in the Nanaimo Daily News, 7 Oct 1972, p 18.
