Biography

Alexander Skene 9th is a member of Clan Skene.

Alexander Skene was a son of Gilbert de Skene and Cristina Mercer. His parents are stated to have been married in 1481.[1] This date must be incorrect. The parents do appear together in a charter of that year but Alexander was infeft as heir, served and retoured as Laird in 1485 and must have been of age. Thus his age is estimated to have been c. 1465.

In 1485, infeft as heir, served and retoured as Laird.[2]

He is thought to have died in 1507 as, on 12 Feb 1507/8, there is a Privy Seal record to Sir Alexander Irvine of Drum and Duncan Forbes of the Ward of the lands of the late Alexander Skene of that Ilk and of the marriage of Alexander Skene, his son and heir. His wife, Agnes, appears on 3 Oct 1508 as his widow.[3]

Family

He married Agnes Forbes, stated to be a daughter of Lord Forbes. The family historian suggests that she was probably a daughter of James, 2nd Lord Forbes, and his Egidia Keith. [4] The date of the marriage is not provided. His eldest son, Alexander, is said to have attained his majority in 1514.[5] This suggests he was born c. 1590. Thus the year of marriage was c. 1589. For this to be a fact and as James Forbes died in 1462, she must have been born late in his life and estimated at c. 1460, to have been the mother of his children.

They had two sons:

  • Alexander Skene, his eldest son and heir. Stated to have attained his majority in 1514.
  • James Skene. Became tenant of Bandodill and was ancestor of the families of Skene of Ranmore, Curriehill, Halyards in Midlothian and Rubislaw.
