Biography

This profile is part of the Skinner Name Study.

Charles worked as a mason and a farmer.[1] He was known more commonly by the nickname "Chauncie."

Unfortunately, he met an untimely death at a young age. According to family tradition, Charles either accidentally fell through the ice on the river and drowned or was murdered while on his way to fetch a doctor for his wife, Lura. "When the ice melted and the body recovered, it was found that he had on him when he left home was missing, which strengthened the idea of foul play. His wife died shortly after and made orphans of Mary Jane or Jenny, age 12; John Ward, age 10; and several smaller children, including a baby."[2]

The children went to live with Lura's sister, Lydia, and her husband Charles Maynard. John Ward Skinner remembered that "as a child had heard talk that perhaps his father had been drunk and was the reason he had fallen through the ice. This had such an effect . . . that he never touched liquor or smoked." John recalled that he left his Aunt and Uncle's home when "his Uncle Charles had him carrying rocks from one rock fence over to another, so it was time to leave."

Chauncie was born 20 April 1822 at Bakersfield, Vermont. He was married to Lura Stevens Wheatley on 7 October 1849 at Hardwick, Vermont. They were the parents of six children: Mary Jane, born Christmas Day 1850; John Ward Skinner, born 30 August 1853; Flora E. Skinner, born 13 January 1855; Isaac Newton, bor 15 December 1858; Anna L., born 27 October 1860; and Arthur H. born 4 October 1862.[3]

Chauncie was murdered 30 November 1862 on a trail near his home in Bakersfield. [4]
