William was born in 1799 in Barnwell County, South Carolina or on his parents property in Muddy Creek, Cheraw's District, Big Pee Dee River, Marlboro County, South Carolina. He was the son of Samuel Slade and Matilda Irby.

In 1800 it appears that his parents were living in Barnwell County, South Carolina; however, if the 1800 census record did not apply to his father, then they would have been on their property along the Big Pee Dee River, at Muddy Creek, Cheraw's District, Marlboro County, South Carolina.

In 1808 his father traveled into the Mississippi Territory through the Creek Nation to buy land in Washington County (according to profile on Slade Families of Coastal North Carolina). In 1809 they were living in Washington County, MS. In 1820 they were living in Marion County or in Hancock County. On March 9, 1829 they were living in Marion County, Mississippi. On this day, he married Vica Bird in Marion County, MS. In 1830, 1840, and 1850 he was living in Marion County, Mississippi. In 1860 he was living in Denton County, Texas. In 1870 he was still living there in Precinct 1, Denton County, Texas. He died after the 1870 census. He was the father of at least six children, Rebecca or Rachel (?)., James A., John J., Felix, Susan E., and Matilda.

He passed away in about 1875 in Precinct 1, Little Elm, Denton County, Texas.
