Biography

Francis George Small was born on 2nd May 1865 in Woodford Island, Clarence River, New South Wales, AUstralia. He was the second son of James Small and Joann McGregor. [1] He was a great grandson of First Fleet convicts, John Small (1761-1850) and Mary Parker (c1758-1824), Second Fleeter George Patfield (1763-1809), and 1793 convict arrival, Mary O'Brien (c1772-1853).

Francis married Janet Sawyer on 20th January 1904 in West Kempsey, New South Wales. [2]

Like many members of the Small family, Francis worked for his whole life in the timber industry; as a timber inspector in the Forestry Department at Kempsey 1902-1910; sawmill manager at Maclean 1910-12; and senior forester at Wyong 1912-30; retiring at 65 years of age.

He passed away, aged 72 years, on 15th January 1938 at the home of his son, Frank, Bent Street, Wingham, New South Wales. [3] The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser carried the following obituary:

"The death occurred of Mr Francis George Small, 72, at the residence of his son, Mr F N Small, Bent Street, Wingham, on Saturday morning. Deceased who was a native of Woodford Island, Clarence River, was a son of the late Mr and Mrs Joseph Small. Deceased was timber inspector in the Forestry Department at Kempsey 1902-1910; sawmill manager at Maclean 1910-12; and Senior Forester at Wyong 1912-30. On 20th January 1904, the late Mr Small was married to Miss Janet Mary Sawyer at Kempsey. Besides the widow, two sons are left." [4]
