Biography

Byron D. Small was born on August 16, 1875 in Harwich, Barnstable, MA to Miriam and Daniel B. Small . He married Annie Eldridge in 1900. The Barnstable Patriot reports that Mr. Byron D. Small left home Sept 10 to join the Gay Head L.S. Station. In 1909, the paper reports that Mr. Byron D. Small has returned home from duty at the Chatham Life Saving Station to enjoy a vacation of 2 months with his family. In 1911 , he is serving at the Life Saving Station in Brockton. I'm not sure about the next few years although Orleans and Truro and Provincetown are mentioned as places the family is living. However, in 1923, The Patriot reports Mr. and Mrs. Byron D. Small and four children have moved from Brockton and will live at the family homestead. This agrees with my father telling me that they moved to Harwich when he was in High School. In 1930, Byron is found acting as foreman at a cranberry bog . In 1940 and 1941 , he is found as a WPA worker in Jr recreation in Chelsea, MA. It is reported in 1941 that Byron Small has entered the Chelsea Naval Hospital for treatment. Chatham Chronicle 5/29/1941. He died in 1948 Hyannis Patriot 1923/03/26
