Biography

William Smalls is a part of US Black heritage.

William was born February 27, 1892 in Beaufort, South Carolina. He was the son of Robert Smalls and Annie Wigg.^[1]

Research Notes

There may be two different men named William Robert Smalls that have been combined on other sites.

In 1900 and 1910, William Robert Smalls, son of Robert Smalls is listed in the same household with his father and sister Sarah.^[2][3] In 1900, Sarah is listed as single and a public school teacher. In 1910, she is listed as Sarah Williams, married with no occupation listed.

In 1917, William Robert Smalls, listed his birth date and place as February 27, 1891 in Beaufort, South Carolina when he registered for the WWI draft. He also listed himself as married with 2 children.^[4]

Military records state William Robert Smalls (born February 27, 1891) enlisted on October 15, 1917 and was discharged August 21, 1919. His death is listed as July 30, 1970.^[5]

In 1920, there is a William R. Smalls, age 26, listed as the single, head of household, living on Prince Street in Beaufort, South Carolina living with his sister, Sarah Williams.^[6] Sarah is listed as widowed and age 55. They are both listed as teachers and it is reported that William owns the house without a mortgage.

Also in 1920, there is a William R. Smalls, age 27, listed as the married, head of household, living in a rented house on South 8th Street in Paducah, Kentucky.^[7] He is also listed as a high school teacher. In the household are his wife, Martineau (age 28) and children Annie E. (age 4) & Robert (age 3). William and Annie are listed as born in South Carolina while Martineau and Robert are listed as born in Pennsylvania.
