In the 1940 census Nelson (age 16) was the single son of Vern Smead in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States.^[2]

Nelson enlisted in the Army on 23 March 1943 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, United States.^[3]

Nelson died (age 87) on 13 April 2010 in Lee, Florida.^[4]
