Biography

Early Life

On 27 Jul 1824 Jane Smailes, of Swalwell, daughter of James (a Keelman) and Isabella Smailes was baptised at Whickham, St Mary, County Durham, England. [1]

Marriage and Family Life

Jane Smiles married Edward Spencer on 27 Jan 1844 at Newcastle Upon Tyne, St John. [2]

Jane already had one child at the time of marriage. John (Smiles) Spencer born in 1842. John's father is unknown, but he is shown as Spencer on the 1851 Census. [3]

Edward and Jane had their first child together in 1844, Edward Spencer. [4] Unfortunately Edward died at the age of 10 months in 1845 [5] Edward was followed in 1845 by Isabella Spencer. [6] Then along came Jane Spencer in 1848. [7] Followed by Mary Ann Spencer in 1850, [8] unfortunately Mary Ann died at the age of four in 1854. [9]

In the 1851 Census Edward was living in Whickham, County Durham, England with his wife Jane and four of their children, all of whom were born in Whickham, County Durham.[10]

The children continued in 1852 with the birth of Sarah Ann Spencer.[11] Followed in 1854 by Elizabeth Spencer,[12] Elizabeth died in 1857, aged 2. [13] In 1856 Ann Spencer was born. [14] Ann, did not live long dying in 1857, [15] not long after her sister Elizabeth. The girl were followed by two boys, Edward Yellowley Spencer born in 1858[16] and James (George) William Spencer 1860 [17] Link to FreeBMD The GRO records show that the child was registered as James William. In the 1861 Census he is shown as John William. However, in the 1871 Census he has his correct name of James William.

In the 1861 census Edward is living in Swalwell, County Durham, England with Jane and 6 of their children. He is still employed as a Blacksmith. [18]

The children keep coming in the 1860's. In 1863 Mary Ann Spencer is born. [19] Followed by Joseph Spencer in 1865 [20] and Anne Spencer in 1867 [21]

In the 1871 Census the Spencer family was living at Quality Row in Whickham. At this point there were five children still living at home. Strangely Edward gave his birthplace as Rotherham this time, rather than Whickham as in the earlier census records. (I wonder if he had assumed he was born in Whickham, like the rest of his siblings, and had recently found out he was not). [22]

Edward and Jane had their 14th and last child Michael Spencer in 1872 [23] Not on 1881 Census. No record of death on GRO.

In the 1881 Census Edward is still living in Quality Row in Whickham. [24]

Death and Burial

Jane is buried in St Mary, Whickham. [25]
