Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1754. She died in 1836 and was buried at Hampton Family Cemetery, Napoleon, Gallatin County, Kentucky. [1]

Elizabeth Smith married Charles Conner sometime in the early 1770's. Even though Charles was her uncle, a brother of her mother, Winifred Conner, he was probably only about ten years older than Elizabeth. Together, Elizabeth and Charles Conner seem to have had two children., Sarah and Samuel. Charles Conner died in 1778 and she remarried in Aug 1779 to Preston Hampton and together they had at least another five children. In 1779, Elizabeth and her husband, Preston Hampton, began some sort of distribution of the estate of Charles Conner. In a partially proven deed, which notes a settlement in 1796, and was partially proven in 1808 or 1809, there is reference to a Samuel Conner receiving "(negro Cate & her child named Cate. Hannah, Peg, Rachel) Saml. to pay his sister Sarah Wade 50 Shillings."[2]

Eliza Hampton applied for a pension for the service of her husband, Preston Hampton, in 1839 stating she married Preston Hampton in Aug 1779. She was aged eighty four the 20th day of last June, signed April 19, 1839. [3]

Research Notes

She was named as Elizabeth Hampton in the will of her husband, Preston Hampton.[4]
